For teachers & students

Google Classroom

Assign any chapter, scene or story straight from the reader to a Google Classroom class. Students open it in Austi, read, write their response and turn it in without leaving the page.

Before you start

  • Sign in to Austi Classics Pro.
  • Use a Google account that teaches at least one active Google Classroom class. This can be a different Google account from the one you use to sign in to Austi.
  • Allow pop-ups for Austi. Google's permission screen opens in a new window.

Connecting doesn't give you teaching rights. Google Classroom decides which classes an account can teach, and classes you attend as a student don't enable Assign reading.

Connect your teaching account

  1. Open Classes from the main menu.
  2. In Teacher tools — connect a teaching account, choose Connect Google Classroom.
  3. Choose the Google account you teach with, and allow the permission Austi asks for.
  4. Return to Austi. If it hasn't updated yet, choose Refresh connection. You'll see Connected and a list of the active classes you teach.

Google groups the permission Austi needs with managing coursework and grades. Austi only uses it to create assignments. If you see Reconnect to allow Austi to create Classroom assignments, connect again and accept the updated permission.

Assign a reading

  1. Open the text and go to the page where the reading should start.
  2. Tap the reading area to show the reader controls, then choose Assign reading.
  3. Choose the Class. The assignment goes to all students in that class.
  4. Give it an Assignment title and, if you like, Instructions or reflection question.
  5. Choose the options you want (below), and a Due date and time. This uses your device's time zone.
  6. Choose Assign now to publish, or Save as a Classroom draft to finish it in Classroom later.

Let students respond and turn in from Austi

On by default. Students see your question beside the text, write their answer in Austi and turn it in to Classroom from there. Turn it off if you'd rather they submit in Classroom.

Share reading activity Optional

Tracks the reading from the linked sentence to the end of its chapter or scene. Students who choose to share appear in your reading activity report.

When the assignment is created you can Open in Google Classroom, View reading activity, or Preview student reading to see exactly what students will open.

If Austi says the result is uncertain, the assignment may already have been created. Check Google Classroom before trying again so you don't post it twice.

For students: open, respond and turn in

  1. Open the assignment in Google Classroom and select the Austi reading link.
  2. Sign in to Austi when asked, then read the assigned text.
  3. When you're done, choose Finished reading.
  4. Connect your student Google Classroom account when prompted. Choose the Google account that's enrolled in the class, then return to the reading tab. Use Refresh assignment status if needed.
  5. Your teacher's question appears. Write your answer. Save draft keeps it without turning in.
  6. Choose Submit and turn in. You'll see Turned in to Google Classroom. There's no need to go back to Classroom to mark it done.

Re-reading or changing your answer

To read again, choose Read again after Finished reading, or open the reading again later and choose Start sharing activity. This starts a new attempt. Your teacher sees each attempt separately, and earlier attempts are kept.

To change a turned-in answer, first choose Unsubmit in Google Classroom. Then return to the reading, open your response and choose Refresh assignment status. Edit your answer and choose Submit and turn in. Your teacher keeps every version you turned in, so they can see how your answer changed.

Sharing reading activity

If your teacher turned it on, you'll be asked whether to share your reading activity. It's optional. See what it records.

Reading students' responses

Each response is saved privately in Austi and attached to the student's Classroom submission as a link. Open it from the student's work in Classroom, signed in to the Austi account that created the assignment.

  • Only the student and the teacher who created the assignment can open a response.
  • Co-teachers don't automatically get access.
  • In a reading activity report, Reader reported means the student chose Finished reading. It's separate from Classroom's own turned-in status.

Sharing bookmarks to Classroom

On the Notes page you can also choose Share to Google Classroom for a single bookmark, or for a shared bookmark set from Shared. This uses Google's own share window to post the link.
