Macbeth: Act 1, Scene 3

182 sentences

[Thunder. Enter the three Witches.]

macbeth_char_033 Where hast thou been, sister?

macbeth_char_034 Killing swine. Selected for annotations

macbeth_char_035 Sister, where thou?

macbeth_char_033 A sailor's wife had chestnuts in her lap

macbeth_char_033 And munched and munched and munched. "Give

macbeth_char_033 me," quoth I.

macbeth_char_033 "Aroint thee, witch," the rump-fed runnion cries.

macbeth_char_033 Her husband's to Aleppo gone, master o' th' Tiger;

macbeth_char_033 But in a sieve I'll thither sail,

macbeth_char_033 And, like a rat without a tail,

macbeth_char_033 I'll do, I'll do, and I'll do.

macbeth_char_034 I'll give thee a wind.

macbeth_char_033 Th' art kind.

macbeth_char_035 And I another.

macbeth_char_033 I myself have all the other,

macbeth_char_033 And the very ports they blow;

macbeth_char_033 All the quarters that they know

macbeth_char_033 I' th' shipman's card.

macbeth_char_033 I'll drain him dry as hay.

macbeth_char_033 Sleep shall neither night nor day

macbeth_char_033 Hang upon his penthouse lid.

macbeth_char_033 He shall live a man forbid.

macbeth_char_033 Weary sev'nnights, nine times nine,

macbeth_char_033 Shall he dwindle, peak, and pine.

macbeth_char_033 Though his bark cannot be lost,

macbeth_char_033 Yet it shall be tempest-tossed.

macbeth_char_033 Look what I have.

macbeth_char_034 Show me, show me.

macbeth_char_033 Here I have a pilot's thumb,

macbeth_char_033 Wracked as homeward he did come. [Drum within.]

macbeth_char_035 A drum, a drum!

macbeth_char_035 Macbeth doth come.

macbeth_char_035 ALL, [dancing in a circle]

macbeth_char_035 The Weird Sisters, hand in hand,

macbeth_char_035 Posters of the sea and land,

macbeth_char_035 Thus do go about, about,

macbeth_char_035 Thrice to thine and thrice to mine

macbeth_char_035 And thrice again, to make up nine.

macbeth_char_035 Peace, the charm's wound up.

[Enter Macbeth and Banquo.]

macbeth_char_007 So foul and fair a day I have not seen.

macbeth_char_014 How far is 't called to Forres?--What are these,

macbeth_char_014 So withered, and so wild in their attire,

macbeth_char_014 That look not like th' inhabitants o' th' Earth

macbeth_char_014 And yet are on 't?--Live you? Or are you aught

macbeth_char_014 That man may question? You seem to understand

macbeth_char_014 me

macbeth_char_014 By each at once her choppy finger laying

macbeth_char_014 Upon her skinny lips. You should be women,

macbeth_char_014 And yet your beards forbid me to interpret

macbeth_char_014 That you are so.

macbeth_char_007 Speak if you can. What are you?

macbeth_char_033 All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Glamis!

macbeth_char_034 All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor!

macbeth_char_035 All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter!

macbeth_char_014 Good sir, why do you start and seem to fear

macbeth_char_014 Things that do sound so fair?--I' th' name of truth,

macbeth_char_014 Are you fantastical, or that indeed

macbeth_char_014 Which outwardly you show? My noble partner

macbeth_char_014 You greet with present grace and great prediction

macbeth_char_014 Of noble having and of royal hope,

macbeth_char_014 That he seems rapt withal. To me you speak not.

macbeth_char_014 If you can look into the seeds of time

macbeth_char_014 And say which grain will grow and which will not,

macbeth_char_014 Speak, then, to me, who neither beg nor fear

macbeth_char_014 Your favors nor your hate.

macbeth_char_033 Hail!

macbeth_char_034 Hail!

macbeth_char_035 Hail!

macbeth_char_033 Lesser than Macbeth and greater.

macbeth_char_034 Not so happy, yet much happier.

macbeth_char_035 Thou shalt get kings, though thou be none.

macbeth_char_035 So all hail, Macbeth and Banquo!

macbeth_char_033 Banquo and Macbeth, all hail!

macbeth_char_007 Stay, you imperfect speakers. Tell me more.

macbeth_char_007 By Sinel's death I know I am Thane of Glamis.

macbeth_char_007 But how of Cawdor? The Thane of Cawdor lives

macbeth_char_007 A prosperous gentleman, and to be king

macbeth_char_007 Stands not within the prospect of belief,

macbeth_char_007 No more than to be Cawdor. Say from whence

macbeth_char_007 You owe this strange intelligence or why

macbeth_char_007 Upon this blasted heath you stop our way

macbeth_char_007 With such prophetic greeting. Speak, I charge you.

[Witches vanish.]

macbeth_char_014 The earth hath bubbles, as the water has,

macbeth_char_014 And these are of them. Whither are they vanished?

macbeth_char_007 Into the air, and what seemed corporal melted,

macbeth_char_007 As breath into the wind. Would they had stayed!

macbeth_char_014 Were such things here as we do speak about?

macbeth_char_014 Or have we eaten on the insane root

macbeth_char_014 That takes the reason prisoner?

macbeth_char_007 Your children shall be kings.

macbeth_char_014 You shall be king.

macbeth_char_007 And Thane of Cawdor too. Went it not so?

macbeth_char_014 To th' selfsame tune and words.--Who's here?

[Enter Ross and Angus.]

macbeth_char_020 The King hath happily received, Macbeth,

macbeth_char_020 The news of thy success, and, when he reads

macbeth_char_020 Thy personal venture in the rebels' fight,

macbeth_char_020 His wonders and his praises do contend

macbeth_char_020 Which should be thine or his. Silenced with that,

macbeth_char_020 In viewing o'er the rest o' th' selfsame day

macbeth_char_020 He finds thee in the stout Norweyan ranks,

macbeth_char_020 Nothing afeard of what thyself didst make,

macbeth_char_020 Strange images of death. As thick as tale

macbeth_char_020 Came post with post, and every one did bear

macbeth_char_020 Thy praises in his kingdom's great defense,

macbeth_char_020 And poured them down before him.

macbeth_char_021 We are sent

macbeth_char_021 To give thee from our royal master thanks,

macbeth_char_021 Only to herald thee into his sight,

macbeth_char_021 Not pay thee.

macbeth_char_020 And for an earnest of a greater honor,

macbeth_char_020 He bade me, from him, call thee Thane of Cawdor,

macbeth_char_020 In which addition, hail, most worthy thane,

macbeth_char_020 For it is thine.

macbeth_char_014 What, can the devil speak true?

macbeth_char_007 The Thane of Cawdor lives. Why do you dress me

macbeth_char_007 In borrowed robes?

macbeth_char_021 Who was the Thane lives yet,

macbeth_char_021 But under heavy judgment bears that life

macbeth_char_021 Which he deserves to lose. Whether he was

macbeth_char_021 combined

macbeth_char_021 With those of Norway, or did line the rebel

macbeth_char_021 With hidden help and vantage, or that with both

macbeth_char_021 He labored in his country's wrack, I know not;

macbeth_char_021 But treasons capital, confessed and proved,

macbeth_char_021 Have overthrown him.

macbeth_char_007 , [aside] Glamis and Thane of Cawdor!

macbeth_char_007 The greatest is behind. [To Ross and Angus.] Thanks

macbeth_char_007 for your pains.

macbeth_char_007 [Aside to Banquo.] Do you not hope your children

macbeth_char_007 shall be kings,

macbeth_char_007 When those that gave the Thane of Cawdor to me

macbeth_char_007 Promised no less to them?

macbeth_char_014 That, trusted home,

macbeth_char_014 Might yet enkindle you unto the crown,

macbeth_char_014 Besides the Thane of Cawdor. But 'tis strange.

macbeth_char_014 And oftentimes, to win us to our harm,

macbeth_char_014 The instruments of darkness tell us truths,

macbeth_char_014 Win us with honest trifles, to betray 's

macbeth_char_014 In deepest consequence.--

macbeth_char_014 Cousins, a word, I pray you. [They step aside.]

macbeth_char_007 , [aside] Two truths are told

macbeth_char_007 As happy prologues to the swelling act

macbeth_char_007 Of the imperial theme.--I thank you, gentlemen.

macbeth_char_007 [Aside.] This supernatural soliciting

macbeth_char_007 Cannot be ill, cannot be good. If ill,

macbeth_char_007 Why hath it given me earnest of success

macbeth_char_007 Commencing in a truth? I am Thane of Cawdor.

macbeth_char_007 If good, why do I yield to that suggestion

macbeth_char_007 Whose horrid image doth unfix my hair

macbeth_char_007 And make my seated heart knock at my ribs

macbeth_char_007 Against the use of nature? Present fears

macbeth_char_007 Are less than horrible imaginings.

macbeth_char_007 My thought, whose murder yet is but fantastical,

macbeth_char_007 Shakes so my single state of man

macbeth_char_007 That function is smothered in surmise,

macbeth_char_007 And nothing is but what is not.

macbeth_char_014 Look how our partner's rapt.

macbeth_char_007 , [aside]

macbeth_char_007 If chance will have me king, why, chance may

macbeth_char_007 crown me

macbeth_char_007 Without my stir.

macbeth_char_014 New honors come upon him,

macbeth_char_014 Like our strange garments, cleave not to their mold

macbeth_char_014 But with the aid of use.

macbeth_char_007 , [aside] Come what come may,

macbeth_char_007 Time and the hour runs through the roughest day.

macbeth_char_014 Worthy Macbeth, we stay upon your leisure.

macbeth_char_007 Give me your favor. My dull brain was wrought

macbeth_char_007 With things forgotten. Kind gentlemen, your pains

macbeth_char_007 Are registered where every day I turn

macbeth_char_007 The leaf to read them. Let us toward the King.

macbeth_char_007 [Aside to Banquo.] Think upon what hath chanced,

macbeth_char_007 and at more time,

macbeth_char_007 The interim having weighed it, let us speak

macbeth_char_007 Our free hearts each to other.

macbeth_char_014 Very gladly.

macbeth_char_007 Till then, enough.--Come, friends.

[They exit.]
